Soviet Style – Still Images and Gifs
"This idealized Soviet male body, which had been shaped in the visual and performing arts as if built out of a composite of “norm breaking” Stakhanovites, began to soften and fracture in Yakobson’s The Bedbug, The Twelve, and The Land of Miracles. In these ballets he muted the narratives of the “extravagant virility” of the ideal Soviet man [...]. Instead Yakobson rewrites the coding for maleness and power in these ballets. This shading of the model socialist male in ballet had to be doubly encrypted because social anxieties about a feminized male also always hover at the margins of the ballet stage."
