Ethnic Dance – Still Images and Gifs
"While other Soviet ballet choreographers who survived the 1930s and 1940s also created ballets using national folkloric materials, often as an aesthetic decorative motif, Yakobson’s work with Soviet minority ethnic groups like the Tatars and Jews focused primarily on stretching the subject matter of ballet to open a space for inclusion—a space where the viewer discovers cultural and political connections along with the viewed. In the United States, by contrast, initial efforts to include blacks in ballet generally focused more on the integration of their bodies into the dominant whiteness of ballet; changes to the actual narrative content of those ballets came later."
